Assisting Communities South Dakota
What we Do

Medical Training
CPR
First Aid
Stop the Bleed
Hypothermia
We train in these areas in order to better support our community
in times of need.
All of our members are required to be CPR certified
and many of our members are Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certified.
We train in the use of several different types of communications.
Texting with the Signal App.
Voice communications via the Zello App.
GMRS Radio (General Mobile Radio Service)
HAM Radio (Amature Radio)
Digital Fusion Radio
HF Radio (High Frequency)
Communications is vital during any
emergency situation.
Day to day communications keeps everyone in touch with what is going on within the group and the community.
Having multiple forms of communication makes it possible to communicate in almost any situation.

Comm's Training

Keeping physically fit is important not only for health
but also for being able to assist others.
Many of our members have participated in the Black Hills Veterans March, which is an endurance walk/run event
to support our veterans.
There are events within the Veterans March that include
a 16 mile walk, a 26 mile walk/run and a 110 mile walk.
Some of our members have also participated in the
South Dakota National Guard's Gut Challenge.
The National Guard emphasizes that a healthy gut is an indicator of nutritional fitness.
-
Physical health: reduced risk of diet-related chronic diseases such as heart disease, obesity, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
-
Mental health: lower risk of depression, anxiety, mood changes, and other mental health issues.
-
Mission readiness: better energy, growth, and repair, which are essential for Service members in demanding roles.
Many of our members spend a lot of time hiking the beautiful trails around the hills as well as walking the Michelson Trail and other fitness challenges.
Physical Training
Mapping and Navigation
Being able to get to where you want to go and knowing your surroundings and topography are very important.
We train in the use of physical maps and compasses, and in the use of on line mapping tools such as CalTopo

CERT Training
CERT Community Emergency Response Team
is a program that educates volunteers about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area. It trains participants in basic disaster response skills, including:
-
Fire safety
-
Light search and rescue
-
Team organization
-
Disaster medical operations
-
The training typically follows a 20-hour FEMA curriculum, allowing CERT members to assist their communities effectively when professional responders are not immediately available. This program provides a consistent approach to volunteer training and organization that professional responders can rely on during disaster situations.
